Wisdom Tooth Removal Can Become Complicated if Not Done as a Teen

Learning more about wisdom tooth removal for your teenager is a good idea. This third set of molars often grows in during one’s teen years or early twenties. While this extra set of molars do not always cause problems, they often do cause crowding of the mouth. This term means that there simply is not enough room for these extra teeth to grow in properly, making extraction necessary.

Wisdom tooth problems

Finding out if wisdom tooth removal is in your teenagers near future is necessary for their good oral health. While it is possible that they can keep their wisdom teeth, you need to make sure by having them evaluated by a professional dentist. When wisdom teeth grow in and there is not enough room in the mouth, they will begin to make the other teeth crooked. Since these extra set of molars do not play an important role, it is necessary to extract them from the mouth so that they do not cause any problems.

Signs that wisdom teeth need to be removed

While signs are not always apparent, most teenagers tend to experience one or more of the following signs that indicate their wisdom teeth need to be removed as soon as possible. These signs include but are not limited to pain in the area, other teeth starting to shift out of their place, cysts and infections.

Why extract wisdom teeth as a teen?

The reasons why dentists recommend that problem wisdom teeth are extracted during one’s teenage years are shown below.

It minimizes damage

The sooner that wisdom teeth are extracted from the mouth, the fewer problems a teen will experience. If it has been determined that a teenager's wisdom teeth are going to cause them problems, they can even be removed before they are fully developed. This minimizes any damage that they can cause, allowing teens to avoid the need for any additional oral treatments, like braces.

Teenagers recover faster

Teens tend to heal faster than adults, making the wisdom tooth extraction process preferred during one’s teenage years. Healing quickly after undergoing a dental procedure is preferred, as patients will experience fewer complications when they heal quickly. One of the reasons why teenagers recover faster is because the roots of their wisdom teeth are not fully formed. The bone surrounding their teeth is also not as dense as when an adult, making the extraction process easier and less painful.

Need to make an appointment for your teenager?

While wisdom tooth removal is not always necessary, it is a good idea for you to find out now whether your teenager needs their wisdom teeth extracted from their mouth or not. Since dental professionals prefer to extract wisdom teeth during one’s teenage years, making a consultation appointment for your teenager is your next step. The last thing that you or your teen wants to happen is for their wisdom teeth to grow in and cause any additional oral problems.
