Are Gum and Mints Just a Mask for Bad Breath?

When it comes to getting rid of bad breath, you may turn to gums and mints. That quick burst of freshness may make an impact, but they do not do much.

Gum and mints do not do anything to address the bacteria that cause bad breath in the first place. Instead, they can help to mask the offensive odors created it.

In a pinch, they will help. That said, focusing on eliminating bad breath should be your priority.

What causes bad breath?

Most people wake up with their breath smelling less than fresh. This is due to the fact the bacteria that live in the mouth are free to multiply and produce foul-smelling gasses since there is reduced saliva flow when a person is sleeping. Morning breath can be eliminated by simply brushing in the morning.

There are also certain things a person can eat that can lead to bad breath like fish, garlic and onions. The odors from these foods can typically be removed by brushing, using a mouthwash or chewing some gum.

A person has a serious issue when their breath consistently smells bad throughout the day. When this is the case, it might be necessary to look for past brushing and flossing for a solution.

Most people who have chronic bad breath are not even aware of their condition. The way dentists detect if a person has bad breath is by measuring the sulfides in the person's breath.

Do you have bad breath?

You can test the freshness of your breath at home by wiping gauze on your tongue and checking for a yellowish color or a noticeable smell. If present, these indicate that you have high sulfide levels.

Another method is to lick the back of the hand and smell it after about five minutes. You can also get a good idea of how your breath smells by smelling a used piece of floss.

Getting rid of bad breath

Here are some simple things you can do to eliminate bad breath:

1. Maintain good oral hygiene

Taking proper care of the teeth and gums goes a long way when it comes to fighting bad breath. Try to brush after every meal or at least twice a day. The most important time a person can brush is right before going to sleep. This ensures the mouth is clean while saliva production is reduced.

You should not forget to clean the tongue as well while brushing. It is a haven for bacteria, and an unclean tongue will house millions of bacteria that cause bad breath.

2. Avoid foods that cause bad breath

Those who want to keep their breath smelling fresh throughout the day should avoid certain foods like garlic and onions. Also, strong drinks, such as alcohol and coffee, can cause bad breath.

3. Eat clean, fresh fruits

Many fruits and vegetables naturally clean teeth and freshen a person's breath. Carrots, lettuce and apples are common examples of vegetables and fruits that will keep your mouth clean.

4. Drink plenty of water

Water helps to clean the mouth since it promotes saliva production. A dry mouth is a breeding ground for bacteria. Also, proper hydration increases your general well-being.

5. Regular visits to the dentist

Sometimes, bad breath is caused by underlying dental issues like tooth decay or infection. Regular visits ensure the dentist can spot such issues in their early stages.
